Sri Paramapadha Natha Perumal (Thiru Paramapadham) - Divya Desam 108

Sri Paramapadha Natha Perumal (Thiru Paramapadham) - Divya Desam 108
Divya Desams refer to the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the works of the Tamil Azhvars (saints). Divya in the Tamil language indicates "premium" and Desam indicates "place" (temple). Of the 108 temples, 105 are located in India, one in Nepal and two outside of the Earthly realms. Most of the Divya Desams in Tamil Nadu follow the Thenkalai tradition. This includes the important temples of Srirangam and Triplicane.

The Divya Desams are revered by the 12 Azhvars in the Divya Prabandha, a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses. Lord Shiva, the other major deity in Hinduism, is similarly associated with the Paadal Petra Sthalams, 275 Shiva temples which are praised in the Tevaram canon by the 63 Nayanars.

Divya Desam 108 - Sri Paramapadha Natha Perumal:

Location: Celestial Abode
Vishnu: Paramapada Naathan
Taayaar: Periya Piraattiyaar
Theertham: Viraja Nadi
Paasuram: Perialwar, Andal, Tirumazhisaialwar, Tiruppanalwar, Tirumangaialwar, Nammalwar, Poikaialwar, Peyalwar.
Vimaanam: Annataanga Vimanam.

This Divyadesam is said to be the place where all the Aathmas finally get the Mukthi. To this divyadesam also, we cant enter along with our body, but only our Aathmas can enter. This divyadesam doesnt exists in Earth. Paramapadham means all the Jeeva Athmas that attain and mingle along with Paramathma and their by attaining Mukthi (Salvation). It is believed that this Divya Desam becomes the eternal abode of those that have visited all of the 106 shrines on earth. This Paramapadham divyadesam also doesnt exists in this earth.

The Moolavar of this Vinnulaga divyadesam is Sri Paramapadha Nadhan. He is found in Veetrirundha thirukkolam on Aadhiseshan facing along South direction, which is said to be the direction of Dharman. Prathyaksham for Aadhiseshan, Garudan, Vishwaksenar, Vishvakseniyar, Nithyasoorigal and Jeevathmas. The Thaayar of this divyadesam is Periya Pirattiyaar.

Mangalasasanam: Periyalwar, Sri Andal, Thirumazhisai Alwar, Thiruppaan Alwar, Thirumangai Alwar, Poigai Alwar, Pei Alwar, Nammalwar have done Mangalasasanam on this perumal with 34 Paasurams.

Pushkarani: Viraja Theertham ; Ayiramatha Theertham.

This Pramapadham divyadesam is also called as Vaikundam, Thirunadu, Perumilam, Vinnagam, Naranan Ulagu etc. After crossing the good and evil, one can attain this Divyadesa perumal. (ie) Our Jeevathmas will be surrounded by lots of good and as well as evil (or) sinful aspects. By crossing these, we can attain the Pramathma only if we perform lots of good aspects in our life.

In Paramapadham, all the times are the same, there is no morning, evening and night and if one attains Paramapadham, he will not feel hungry (or) rather than to sleep.

Our human body is made up of Panja Bhoothams, (ie) 5 different particles we can say. After death, our Aathma escapes out from the body made of Panjabhoothams to attain Mukthi. This Aathma tht comes out from the body is referred to as "Nith Soorigal". They could not be destroyed by any earthquakes, typhoons (or) Pralayam.

Emperumaan is found along with Lakshmi piratti beside him and Bhoomi piratti is bearing all the Aathmas, which finally merges into the divine foot of Sriman Narayanan and Neela devi, who gives all her help towards the perumal is also found.

Periya pirattiyaar is the hamsam of Thiruvarul of the Emperumaan. Bhoomi piratti is the hamsam of Enjoy and help.

So, the perumal along with Periyapiratti, Bhoomipiratti and Neeladevipiratti is found in this Paramapadha divyadesams.

Infront of the perumal, there is no rich or poor persons, and there is no any racism. But, it came out from ill - minded persons who though they are rich and superior over the poor persons and likewise the fight between castes came out. But, except Sriman Narayanan there is no other thing called as "Superior".

So hereafter, all should think of one god, irrespective of the caste and creed, but our final aim should be all own Aathmas should merge on to the Divine food of Sriman Narayanan. By saying "Om Namo Narayana", it is believed that all can reach his thiruvadi.

This is one among the Vinnulaga thirupathi, where all humans cant reach there with the human body, and only our soul (Aathma) can reach there. This Thirupathi cant be viewed through our ordinary eyes. This Thiru Paarkadal Divyadesam doesnt exists in this mighty earth. Because of this, along with out human body, we cant able to see this sthala perumal. It is situated lots and lots of miles away from the Earth, crossing the sky and above it, the perumal is found on the Aadhiseshan in Bhujanga Sayana and facing along the South direction which is said to be the direction of Yamadharman and watching his activities.

All Devars are said to be persons where shadow doesnt fall and their feets doesnt touch the land. Likewise, the perumal in Paarkadal in watching all of the activities of all Aathmas and depending upon their pavam (sin) and Punyam (good) activities, he is the final Mukthi. The Perumal is found on all Jeevathmas and he is the person who is leading all of us to a good path. Emperumaan separates as Vasudevan, Sangarshanan, Prathyumnan and Anirudhan. Vasudevan is capable of giving Gnanam, Sakthi, Tejas and is said to have the hamsam of Sriman Narayanan. Sangarshanan is said to be having the great qualities like Sakthi and Gnana and is said to be the hamsam of Lord Shivan. Prathyumnan is said to be the hamsam of Lord Brahmadevan and is a great Gnana person. Anirudhan is said to be the hamsam of Parasakthi and Lakshmi piratti and has the inbuilt qualities like richness, Gnana and Sakthi.

Vasudevan in equivalent to Kesavan, Madhavan and Narayanan. Sangarshan is equivalent to Govindan, Vishnu and Madhusoodhanan. Prathyumnan is equivalent to Thiruvikraman, Vaamanan and Sridharan. Anirudhan is equivalent to Rishikesan, padmanabhan and Damodharan. These all 12 are referred to as 12 Sooriyars and chandiras who is found along in all 12 directions (sides) there by making all Jeevathmas to emerge, lead their life, calculating their Pavam and Punyam.

"Om Namo Nrayana", the Ashtakshara Manthram is surrounded all over this divyadesam and by saying this mantram, we can also reach the Thiruppaarkadal Nathan in this divyadesam. This Thirupaarkadal divyadesam doesnt exists in this mighty earth. Because of this, along with out human body, we cant able to see this sthala perumal. It is situated lots and lots of miles away from the Earth, crossing the sky and above it.

The Moolavar of this divyadesam is Sri Ksheerapthi Nathan. Also named as "Thiruppaarkadal Nathan". He is found on the Aadhiseshan in Sayana - Kidantha thirukkolam facing his thirumugham towards South direction. Prathyaksham for Brahma devan, Rudran (Lord Vishnu) and all other Devars and Rishis. Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple (Thiru Dwaraka) Dwarka - Divya Desam 106
Dwaraka/Mukthi Kshetram/Moksha Puri is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu located in Rajkot, Gujarat. Beth Dwaraka is the place where Sudhama (Kuchela) lived and worshipped Lord Krishna. This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Krishna built during 16th century. The sanctum sanctorum of Lord Krishna known as Jagat Mandir/Nija Mandir was built by his grandson some 2500 years back. The main entrance to this temple is called ‘Moksha Dwar’ as the name itself reveals the significance and the Southern entrance which leads to Gomathi Theertham known as Swarga Dwara. Dwaraka, Beth Dwaraka, Nath Dwara, Dakor and Kankroli are collectively known as Pancha Dwarka.

Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple (Thiru Dwaraka) Dwarka - Divya Desam 106
This sthalam deals all the stories that deal with the way he became the king and ruled the empire and ended the Krsihna Avatar for which it is taken.

Vada Mathura is known as the Janma Bhoomi (birth place) of Sri Krishnar; Aayarpadi is where He was brought up and lead his childhood days; and Dwaraka is the place where his Punya Avtar ended. Sri Krishna revealed His appearance for Brahma deva, Indra and all the other Devas and for Vasudeva and Devaki in prison in Vada Mathura divyadesam (Janma Bhoomi). Same way, Sri Krishna gave his appearance to Sri Nandagopar, who brought up Sri Krishna in Aayrpadi.

After all of his duties are over and the purpose for which he took the Krishna Avatar was over, he was killed by an archer, ulupadhan, who aimed at Sri Krishna's feet thinking it as a white pigeon. Thus, the avathaar of Sri Krishna ended in Thiru Dwaraka. In Dwaraka Sri Krishna revealed His presence to Rukmani, Sathyabama, Jambhavathi and other Ashta -maharishis, his friends, his sons, neighbors and all of Aayars in Dwaraka. These all persons thought that Sri Krishna belong to them, but He proved here that He belong to the entire Universe and to all the Jeevathmas in this mighty world.

Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple (Thiru Dwaraka) Dwarka - Divya Desam 106
Draupadhi who was also named as "Paanjali", married Panja Pandavas and she treated Sri Krishna as her own brother. When Draupathi was ill - treated in the midst of Duriyodhan's palace, Sri Krishna gave her clothes thereby protecting her. Thus, he gave His audience to Draupathi also.

There was a king in Mathura by named "Gargeya" who doesn't have any children. All the Yadhavas teased on him and as a result of it, he did a severe tapas towards Lord Shiva to bless with a son who would ride out the Yadhava families. Finally, on satisfied fully on the tapas of the king, Shiva gave the boon and Gargaya got a son and named as "Kaalayavannan". Gargeya king handed over the Kingdom to him, so that he could ride away the Yadhavas. He collected all of his troops to make an attack on the Yadhavas.

Knowing this beforehand, Sri Krishna asked the ocean king to help him out from this, by giving a place in the ocean a small town can be created and is ruled by Sri Krishna.

Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple (Thiru Dwaraka) Dwarka - Divya Desam 106
Sri Krishna asked Vishwakarma to build the town in the land and the place was built in a beautiful way with lots of streets, theerthams etc. It was built so beautiful that on seeing it one can say that place as an entering point (Dwaram) to heaven. Since, this place served as the Dwaram (entering point) to the heaven, this sthalam is called as "Dwaraka". So, Dwaraka is the place where all the Yadhavas in Mathura are transferred to Dwaraka.

Kaalayavannan attacked Mathura but at that time, since Sri Krishna and Balarama are born as a normal human being, they could not defend him and ran away from him and hide in to a cave. At the same time, Musukundan was resting there in the cave due to the strain against his fight again the devas.

Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple (Thiru Dwaraka) Dwarka - Divya Desam 106
Musukundan had got a peculiar boon and it is if any one kicks him, (or) whoever wakes him up they will be burnt to ash. Likewise, when Kaalayavannan entered into the cave and found Musukundan and awakened him. As soon as Musukundan opened his eyes, Kaalayavannan was burnt into ash. Finally, Musukundan felt on the feet of Sri Krishnar and asked for his relief. For that Sri Krishna explained him that in his next birth and in the next Janmam he was blessed by Sri Narayanan in Badrikasramam.

Another person who got the blessings and appearance of this sthalaperumal was Kuchela, who was a very poor Brahmin and a child-hood day acquaintance of Sri Krishna. As soon as Sri Krishna saw Kuchelar, he invited him and asked him to be seated.

Sri Kalyana Narayana Perumal Temple (Thiru Dwaraka) Dwarka - Divya Desam 106
Sri Krishna asked him what's the reason he had come for to meet as if he doesn't know the reason. But, the Emperumaan can easily understand why he has come for. At that time, Kuchelar gave him some hand pound. On getting the pounded rice Sri Krsihna was so happy with Kuchela and asked him that he will give some of his countries for him. But, poor Kuchelar doesn't want any of them, but he came only to see his one among his old friends. Admired by the great friendship character of Kuchela, Sri Krishna converted his old hut into a very big house and made him as a wealthy person. This shows how a relationship must be should be between the Paramathma and Jeevathma.

It is said that the Dwaraka sthalam exists in two parts. One is near to the Dwaraka railway station and is known as "Gomuki Dwaraka" and the other is known as "Pate Dwaraka" which is 20 miles away from Gomuki Dwaraka. It is believed that only in pate Dwaraka, Sri Krishna lived along with all the Yadhavas and his pirattis.

In Pate Dwaraka, the moolavar is Dwarakanathji, with a Conch & Wheel (Sanku and Chakram) in standing posture (Nindra thirukkolam). In his chest lies, Sri Lakshmai. Also separate sannadhis for Kalyanaraya Krishna, Thiruvikrama moorthy, Sri Lakshmi Narayana, Devaki, Jambavathi and Rukmani.

The temple is opened for worship from 5 Am in the morning and all the decorations known as Alangarams (different ways of dressings) for the Lord are done in the preseence of the devotees. In the morning, Dwaraknathji is dressed as a small child, and then as a king and after that as an old aged sage. Ekantha seva and Thirumanjanam (bath gives to the perumal with holy waters) are done.

About 2 Kms from Dwaraka, there is a separate temple for Rukmani and the beuatiful idol is made of white marble in standing pose.

Sri Navamohana Krishna Perumal Temple (Thiru Ayarpadi) Gokulam - Divya Desam 105
Thiruayarpadi/Gokul/Braja Bhoomi/ is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu located on the river banks of Yamuna, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The legend has that Lord Krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devaki as their eighth child, the little Krishna was relocated to Mathura/ Thiruayarpadi immediately after his birth in order to save him from the murderous intentions of Kamsa. Little Krishna spent most pleasurable childhood with his foster parents Yasodha and Nandagopan in Thiruayarpadi. He spent his mischievous and enjoyable days with cowherds, cows & calves in their pastureland in Mathura. Thus, this sacred land has attained significant place in Hindu mythology.

Sri Krishna, who was born to Sri Vasudeva and Devaki in Mathura, was brought up by Nandagopa and Yasodhai in Aayarpadi. This is the place where Sri Krishna spent all of his childhood days. The temple where the Alwars did the mangalasasanam of the perumal is not in existence now and the idols now found are said to be installed in the later date.

Soordasr, who was one of the disciple of Sri Vallabhacharya was a blind person and after he was brought up to this temple, he was blessed by Sri Krishna and praised the perumal in of poems.

In the life of a person, there are two main relationships that will continue and end till our lives. One is the mother and the next is the wife. For Sri Krishna, there are two mother, Devaki who gave him the birth and the other one is Yasodha who brought Him up. Like how he got two mother, he got two wives also. One is Rukmani and the other one is Sathyabama. Thus, Sri Krishna gives importance to both of his mothers and his two wives. To explain this, this sthalaperumal Navamohana Krishna gives his seva along with his two wives, Rukmani and Sathyabama in standing posture.

The Aayarpadi Sthalapuranam is closely related with Mahakavi Soordasa and Sathyabama. In the previous Janmha, Soordasa lived as Akroorar, once a great devotee who is considered to be great person in character and a sincere Vishnu bhakta.

One day, Sathyabama was feeling lonely in the palace and she was in an urge mood to see Sri Krishna. But, Sri Krishna was unable to come to the palace then. At that time, Akroora came to the palace. On seeing the restlessness of Sathyabama he asked for the reason why she was restless? She told that she wants to see Sri Krishna that too in one minute, if he doesn't come in a minute, she will sacrifice her life. As her name is Sathyabama, she will do whatever she says. Hearing this from Sathyabama, Akroora went in search of Sri Krishna. He could not find him anywhere. The time is also running and it is almost to end of a minute. Without knowing the consequence, Akroora he himself changed into Sri Krishna and stood in front of Sathyabama. On seeing this, Sathyabama could not recognize that it is only Akroora who had come there as Sri Krishna and she started to talk to him in love words.

Sri Navamohana Krishna Perumal Temple (Thiru Ayarpadi) Gokulam - Divya Desam 105
After this, Akroora went towards Sri Krishna and told him what had happened. On hearing this, Sri Krsihna got angry on him and shouted at him that he has imitated as the perumal (Paramathma) and by doing this he has comitted a sin and that is his eyes saw Sathyabama in a different way. so, Sri Krishna cursed him that in the next Janma he will be born as a blind person and Sathyabama as an ordinary working person. But, at the same time, he said once they get the Gnana, their curse will wither away.

As cursed, Akroorar born as "Soordasa", in the next Janma. Despite being blind only in vision, his Gnana was so bright and he always praised the Lord through his songs and finally he got the Sabha vimochan through Sri Krishna.

Sri Navamohana Krishna Perumal Temple (Thiru Ayarpadi) Gokulam - Divya Desam 105
About 4 miles away from Aayarpadi, there is a place named "Purana Gokulam" and a Krishna temple which is considered to be Gokulam. The Yamuna river flows in front of the purana (old) Gokulam temple and idols of Nandagopa, Yasodha and Balarama are seen. In a wooden cradle, one can see Sri Krishna posing as a child.

This Gokulam divyadesam is said to be with many of childhood naughty acts performed by Sri Krishna. The devotees are advised to visit both Gokulam and Old Gokulam.

History & Legends:

The legend has that in Kritha Yuga there was a demon Madhu underwent severe penance praying to Lord Shiva. Lord was pleased at the devotion of Madhu and offered him Trident as boon. Lavanasura son of Madhu started to harass the Rishis and Sages. The Rishis and Sages appealed to Lord Rama to save them from the mayhem caused by the demon Lavanasura. Lord Rama instructed his youngest brother Satrugna to proclaim a battle against Lavanasura. In the fierce battle, Lavanasura was killed by Satrugna. Shortly, a charming city was constructed on the river banks of Mathura; this was the origin of Mathura City. This stunning city was ruled by King Satrugna and their descendants for several years. Later, it was taken over by the Kings of Yadava Dynasty.

Govardhana Giri is situated close to this sacred land has significant place in the Hindu mythology. Nandagopa, foster father of Little Krishna arranged an elaborate worship of Lord Indra as a gratitude for the abundance of rains. Little Krishna asserted that the Mount Govardhan was deserved to be worshiped for its preservation of pastureland. Soon, the entire villagers encouraged the very idea of Little Krishna and a grand worship of Mount Govardhan was conducted. Lord Indra was felt affronted and decided to teach the Yadavas a lesson with his heavy rainstorm. Little Krishna lifted the Mount Govardhan with his little finger and provided shelter for the villagers under the hill. The torrential rain continued for seven days and washed off the entire village. Thus, he saved the entire clan of Yadavas from the heavy downpour. Lord Indra realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness.

An interesting legend associated with Mount Govardhan was that the Sage Pulastya was mesmerized at the serenity of this hill and desired to have it as his Abode in Kashi. Mount Govardhana revealed its inability to move from its place. Sage Pulastya agreed to place the Mount on his palm and precede his journey to Kashi. Mount Govardhan put forward a condition that while their journey to Kashi, once placed down the hill anywhere on the Earth would remain firm. Sage Pulastya readily agreed for the condition and headed their journey to Kashi. On their way to Kashi, they arrived on this sacred land of Mathura. Seeing the tranquility of this place Mount Govardhan changed its mind and desired to remain this land forever. Soon, Sage Pulastya placed the Mount on this sacred land and went for ablations. After coming back, Sage tried with all his strength to lift the Mount Govardhan from the ground but his efforts went fruitless. The most dejected Sage Pulastya cursed the Mount Govardhan to reduce its size on daily basis and gradually leave no trace of it by the end of Kaliyuga.

Thiruppirudhi is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu located in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. In this temple Sri Adi Sankara sanctified the idol of Lord Narasimha which is more than 1200 years old. Surprisingly, the left wrist of the idol of Lord Narasimha is getting thinner day by day and it is believed that once this phenomenal comes to an end the route to Badarikashram will be closed forever by a landslide. Lord Vasudeva shrine is just 30 yards away from the main shrine of Lord Narasimha, which is one of the prominent temples of Lord Vishnu here. The idol of Lord Vasudeva carved out of a black stone which has the height of 6’ft was consecrated by Sri Adi Sankara. During the time of extreme winter, the idol of Lord Badrinarayana moved Joshimath to carry out the daily rituals.

Joshimath / Jyotirmath is the first matha or Peeta (UttarAmnAya matha, or northern monastery) established by Shri Adi Jagadguru Shankaracharya. At the age of 11, Adi Shankaracharya came to Badrikaranya for performing penance. After performing penance for 5 years, he got enlightened under the Amar Kalpavriksha tree. There is a temple dedicated to Lakshmi Narayana. After going further up, one will find Totakacharya cave and Rajarajeshwari temple.

Totakacharya was one of the four principal disciple of Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the Advaita philosopher. His original name was Giri (AnandaGiri). He composed Totakashtakam, in praise of Guru Adi Shankara, Tika on the Mandukya Karika, and SrutisArasamuddharana.

On top of Adi Shankaracharya cave (Tapasthali Sphatik Shivling Gufa) where, he attained enlightenment there is a Kalpavriksha tree (mulberry tree) which is more than 2500 years old. The Jyoteshwar Mahadeo Temple has a crystal (sphatik) Shivalingam brought by Adi Shankaracharya himself from Kailash. There is a akhanda jyothi burning all the time. The vatavruksham is an ancient tree with lofty top raising in their full green splendor towards the sky, with strong stems, gigantic boughs, that spoke of such anquity, of such long years during which they had looked down upon the valley below, where pilgrims came and went, and the things were continually changing, while it stood undisturbed and changeless. Climbing further up, one comes across the Purnagiri Mata temple and swayambu Sankatamochana Hanuman temple dedicated to Goddess Durga and Lord Hanuman respectively.

Kalpavriksha, also known as kalpataru, kalpadruma and kalpapAdapa, is a wish fulfilling divine tree said to fulfill all desires. It originated during Samudra manthan (churning of the ocean of milk) along with the Kamadenu, the divine cow providing for all needs. The unique property of the tree is that it never loses a single leaf by itself, it is evergreen and is said to be emanating the deep-seated devotion of Shakaracharya for the Supreme Godhead Vishnu. “Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa narrates one way of gaining insight into the cosmic doctrine of karma is through the parable of the Kalpataru, the wish fulfilling tree.” This tree has an astonishing girth of 36 meters.

Lord Narasimha temple (Tiruppiridhi) This 1200 years old Narasingh Badari temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha. When Adi Shankaracharya worshipped Lord Narasimha here, he was bestowed with jnanam (knowledge) to write a commentary on the vedanta sutras. Lord BadriNarayan appeared in his dreams and advised him to retrieve a Saligrama shila of Him from Tapta kunda and build a temple for him. The moolavar is Paramapurusha Narasimhar and thaayar is Parimalavalli (MahaLakshmi). Teertham dedicated to this place is Ganges (Manaseega pushkarani -- Manasaras). and vahanam is Goverdhana Vimaana. Pratyaksha darshan was given to Goddess Parvati. Tirumangai Azhwar has done Mangalaasaasanam to perumal here. It is believed that perumal and the kovil as described in prabhandam should be in midst of Himalyas on the banks of Manasa Sarovaram beyond Badrinath or Gopala perumal at Nandaprayag.

The garbhagriham houses a Swayambhu black saligrama murti of Lord Narasimhar at the center in yogasana posture facing east, Lord Badri Narayana to his right, Uddhavar, Kubera and Chandidevi further to His right. And onto the Lord's left are Garuda, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. The name ``Thiruppirudhi" stresses that it has a close relation between the Lord and His devotees. The devotees show their affection towards the Lord and they get the same from the Lord. That's the reason this spot got the name "Thiruppirudhi".

Legend is that when Lord BadriNarayanan was found by Adi Shankara, there was a voice from a Nabhi chakra which prophesied that as the Lord Narasimhar's left wrist falls down, the Nara Narayana parvat will merge into one, and current Badrinath will become inaccessible to pilgrims and shift to Bhavishya Badri. Proof of this is the real thinning of left wrist at Joshimath temple and also the Swayabhu MahaVishnu forming at Bhavishya Badri which will be clearly explained in a future post. One should really goto these places when we are young as described in Azhwars pashurams.

Lord Vasudeva temple This is one among the most sacred Vishnu shrines which is located just next to Narasimha temple. The lord is in Nindra thirukkolam with chaturbhujam. Idol of Lord Mahavishnu as Vasudev in the inner sanctrum sanctorum is carved out of a piece of black stone measuring 6 feet in height. Along with Vasudev is Sridevi, Bhoodevi, Leela devi, Oorvasi devi, Subhadra and Balram in the outer prakara. There are also idols of Vinayaka in dancing posture, Brahma, Indra, Chandra, Navadurga and Gauri Shankar. It is also noted for housing an idol of a dancing Ganesha, one of only two such idols venerated in any temple in the country.

Deva Prayag/ Pancha Prayag is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu located at the confluence of river Alakananda and Bhagirathi in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Vishnu consecrated by Sri Adi Sankara. The First Divyadesam as one travels from Haridwar to Badrinath is Devaprayag. This Kshetram is also called as "Thirukkandam" and also as "Kadi Nagar". It lies about 45 miles away from Rishikesh to Badrinath and about 1700 feet above the sea level.

Prayag means the place where two divine rivers mingle together. Devprayag meaning “Godly confluence”. The Bhagirathi and Alakananda meet to form the holy Ganges which comes down as Aadi Ganga. This place is also called as “Tirukkandam” and “KandvennumKadinagar”. Ancient name to this place is "SudarshanaKshetra". It is one of the five sacred confluences in the hills and is an important place of pilgrimage for devout Hindus and SriVaishnavites.

The Alakananda arising at the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak glaciers near the border with Tibet and Bhagirathi at Gaumukh at the foot at the Gangotri glacier and Khatling glacier in the Garhwal Himalaya merge together at this place. Situated at the confluence of the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi, the town of Devaprayag lies at an elevation of 830m (2723 feet).

Traditionally, it is considered to be the place where sage Devasharma led his ascetic life in Satayuga, and succeeded in having a glimpse of God giving birth to its present name, Devprayag. Lord MahaVishnu gave vardaan to DevSharma that he would reside at this place forever. Lord Rama too had given pindadaanam to King Dasharatha at this place.
Religious ablutions take place at 2 basins excavated in the rock at the junction of the holy streams - The confluence has Brahma Kund on Bhagirathi River and Vasishta Kund on Alaknanda River. Due to heavy monsoon rains the kund was completely submerged by Ganga water. Also, we could not see the the clear color distinction between the two rivers one generally observes. The river was flowing very fast.

The Raghunath temple, with katyur architecture is enshrined with Lord Rama (also known as Purushothaman, Venimaadavar and NeelaMega perumal), whose height is 6 foot in Gaandhar style captures the attention of every visitor. The temple is built of huge stones. It stands upon a terrace in the upper part of the town and consists of an irregular pyramid capped by a white cupola with a golden ball and spire known as Mangala Vimaanam. The temple is surrounded by hills: Dasarathanchal in front, Narasimhachal to right and Giridhachal where the temple is located. It is believed both Lord SriRama and Dasharatha did penance at Devprayag. Rama and Lakshmana performed a yajna here to atone to kill Ravana, who was a Brahmin. It is one of the 108 Divya kshetrams for Srivaishnavas to visit.

Dasharathachal Peak, contains of a rock, known as Dashrathshila, on which Raja Dasharath is said to have led a life of penance. A small stream, the Shanta running down from the Dasharathachal, is named after Shanta, the daughter of Raja Dasharath and is considered to be sacred. One will have to walk close to 10-15 minutes to reach the temple premises. We crossed over the bridge. Before climbing stairs to the temple, take a diversion towards the right to reach the bathing ghat.

It is said that the Pandavas, after the Kurukshetra war, acquired the sin of slaughtering their own kin. To get rid of this, Rishi Markandeya said that it was sufficient for them to take a holy dip at Devaprayag and other prayags among the Pancha Prayag.

Anna daanam at this place is highly auspicious. The Raja Swethakethu had done lot of dharmic anushtans, except anna daanam (even after annadanam having been emphasized by many maharshis). After having reached higher lokas, he started feeling terrible hunger. He requested Brahma to appease his hunger. Then Brahma suggested that he go back to the earth and undergo a specific remedy (upahaaram), which did not work. Next, a muni suggested that he bathe in the prayags. This too, did not work. Finally, he met Agastya muni at Devaprayag. Agastya muni suggested that he perform Annadanam at Devaprayag. When he said that he is unable to do it because he already has a Deva sharira, Agastya muni explained that it is enough for him to have something to give, which can be used to perform that Annadanam. When he had nothing Agastya muni told him to give the fruits of all his Punyas. When Swethaketu did this, Annadanam was performed on his behalf at Devaprayag, following which his hunger was satiated and he obtained Moksham. It is said that Devaprayag is a spot where intense meditation for one Ghatika (i.e, 24 minutes) suffices to remove all sins and achieve one's objectives and even moksham. The two other Ghatikaachalams being Sholingur (Thirughatikai) and Thirukkadiththaanam (in Kerala).

The Banyan tree here is of very high importance. The Banyan tree is a holy tree worshipped by Hindus. It is said all Brahma, Vishnu (as Venimadhava) and Maheshwara (as Aadalangeshar) reside in this tree and hence it is considered very auspicious. The pradakshina of this tree during sunrise is of high spiritual importance.

The Lord Raghunatha is adorned with the following color of vastram on each specific day: White (Monday and Friday), Red (Tuesday and Sunday), Green (Wednesday) and Black on Saturday.

Perialwar says in his pasuram that the smoke from the Yagnas' agni kunds, used to spread on both the shores of the river Ganga here. There is a witness to Lord Raghunatha here. Sri Rama after killing Ravana, came here and meditated to wash off the sin arising out of killing Ravana. As we proceed to the temple after a bath in the river, we can notice the Footprints of Sri Rama on a huge rock. We now get into the temple, whose staircase is quite steep and high. In the temple we see Sri Purushottama. We can also see the rock seat on which Sri Rama meditated. It has a backrest also. We also see a big Vata vruksham [banyan tree]. This tree is existing for many thousands of years.
