Thirukurungudi Temple, Tirunelveli
History:
Lord Mahavishnu restored the earth from the hands of demon Hiranyatchaka who attempted to take the planet under the sea. The Lord appeared in the form of a Swine with a horn on the nose and raised the earth. Mother Earth appealed to the Lord to teach how the beings could reach his doors.

Once a feud took place between a devil and a man. The devil demanded the man for its food. The man said that it was fasting day – Ekadasi day – and requested the devil to wait till he returned after praying the God in hyms in the Kaisikam metre. Both the devil and the man attained salvation because the former heard the songs and later sung it.

The temple is on the banks of Nambi river where Lord Varahamurthy shrunk his huge form with His Consort, hence the place is called Thirukurungudi. (Shrinking-Kurukuthal in Tamil). It is also believed that the Silambaru river flows here from the feet of the Lord.

The flag post in the temple is a little away from the usual position as in other temples. The Lord wanted to give his Darshan to a backward community devotee name Nambaduvan.

A temple of Saiva - Vaishnava harmony:
There is a shrine for Lord Shiva Manthragiriswarar and Kala Bhairava in the Thirukungudi Nambirayar temple symbolizing the harmony between the major Hindu religious sects. This is one of the 108 Vaishnava Divya desas. While Pujas are performed in the Perumal shrine, the priest would ask whether the Puja goes on in the Shiva shrine also. The other will reply in the affirmative. The tradition is vogue even today. The shrine is venerated in the Mangalasasanams of Thirumangai Azhwar, Thirumazhisai Azhwar and Nammazhwar. The antiquity of the temple dates back to 3000 years.

Thirukurungudi is the holy soil that gave birth to Nammazhwar. When Thirumangai Azhwar prayed to Sri Ranganatha in Srirangam, the Lord directed him to visit Thirukurungudi for salvation where the Azhawar sung his last Mangalasasanam.

The Lord appears here in Nindra (standing), Amarndha (sitting), Nadandha (walking) and Kidandha (lying) positions. Thirukurungudi is also known as Kuranga Kshethram. Kuranga is the name of Boomadevi who performed penance on the Lord in this holy place.

  1. There is a direct train from Bangalore to Nagerkoil and the pilgrim can get down at VALLIYUR which is just 12 KM away from Thirukurungudi. Contact Sri Ramanujan Bhattar on his land line 04635 265692 who will provide boarding and lodging facility at this shrine and also for the darshan of the main as well as other shrines in and around Thirukurungudi. There is one another shrine at Nanguneri ( Vanamamalai) another divyadesam near this place which is also worth visiting by the pilgrims. This shrine is one among the eight places in our Country where Shriman Narayanan is swayambu murthy.
