No, we should not have idols which are hollow. We should have only pure solid idols.

The size of idols kept in our pooja room should not be more than fist (A fist is a hand that has the fingers curled into the palm and the thumb retracted.) size of our hand.
It can be more than fist size but the thing is u need to do abhishekam and naivedyam regularly and purely which we cannot perform every day.
