Sri Rahu Bagavan is one of the main Navaggraham that make people go up to riches or come down to rags. If He is well placed in Jathagam the person is spoken for his luck everywhere. Rahu is snake God dreaded after Lord Sani by astrologers for his Famous influence called “Sarpa Dosham” that delays a person’s marriage and spoils fidelity. Sri Naganathaswamy Temple or Rahu Sthalam is one of the 9 Navagraha Temples around Kumbakonam and is dedicated to Rahu . The Presiding Deity is Lord Naganathaswamy. There are two Shrines for the Goddess; Piraiyanivanudalumai’s Shrine is adjacent to Naganathaswamy’s shrine and GiriGujambika with Lakshmi and Saraswathy by Her side has a separate temple. Rahu Bhagavan is seen with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni. Sri Naganathaswamy Temple is one where Lord Shiva was worshipped by Rahu and got relieved of a curse. (Read the post “Keezhaperumpallam – Kethu Temple“) A unique feature of Naganatha Swamy temple is that Rahu Bhagavan is seen with human face. Usually in other places, Rahu Bhagavan is seen with a serpent face. Here Rahu Bhagavan is present with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni. This was originally a forest of Senbaka trees. A Shivalingam was found under one of these trees here and hence He came to be known as Shenbagarane Eswara.

Nandi after worshipping Shiva attained the status as Nandeeswaran here. Vinayakar attained the status of Head of Ganas or Ganapathi. Indira, the King of Devas was relieved of bad smell emanating from his body by worshiping Goddess Girigujambal with Punugu.

On entering the Eastern gate way, one can find the Vinayaga temple, Balipeedam, Nandeeswarar Mandapam and Dhwaja Sthambam (Flag post). On the southern side there is the temple tank. On entering the main gopuram, the Deity of Rahu Bhagavan is in the south West corner of the praharam.

Lord Rahu as per Jyotish Shastra is the snake lord and is a very important Navagraham about people getting married and having children as per the positions of Rahu and Ketu in their horoscope.

Kumbakonam is a holy city with lot of beautiful and most sought after temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Tirunageswaram is a small town near Kumbakonam where the most popular Parihara Sthalam for the Navagraha Lord Rahu is situated.

Uppiliappan Koil a famous Vishnu temple which is one of 108 Divya desams, also hailed as ‘South Tirupathi’, is situated very close to this temple. Lot of Hotels, Lodges and Mutts are available for stay and food is not at all constraint.

The main presiding deity of Tirunageswaram Rahu Temple is Lord Naganatha Swamy and his consort Giri Gujambika who is enshrined with Lakshmi and Saraswati by Her side. Rahu Bhagavan with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni are in a small separate shrine in the outer Praharam. Lord Shiva was worshipped by Rahu (Raghu) and got relived of a curse. A unique feature of Naganatha Swamy temple is that Lord Rahu is seen with human face.

Devotees who have Kala Sarpa Dosha, Sarpa Dosha and Rahu Dosha must positively visit this temple and perform Pooja and Milk Abishekam to Lord Rahu for getting married and getting Children. People who have Rahu dasa or Rahu Bukthi are also advised to do Parihara in this temple.

Once, Saint Sushila cursed Sri Ragu Bagavan - Sun’s Ascend Node, one of the nine-orbiting planets. To absolve his curse, Ragu worshipped Lord Siva in Kumbakonam Kilkottam in the first quarter of the night - First Jamam and Senbakaranyam in the Second quarter, and Thirupamburam in the Third quarter, and Nagaikaronam in the Fourth quarter and at last at Usha time came to this holy Senbaka forest and prayed to him to absolve his curse.

So, we can see Sri Ragu Bagavan with his two consorts in his marriage posture in the Southwest corner of this temple. Because of the serpent deity Ragu’s worship, the Lord here also been called Naganathar, and this village Tirunageswaram.

Temple occupies an area of 630 feet South-North and 800ft East-West with adjacent sub lanes and four major streets around. There are four gateways with Gopuram in the big and high compound walls of the temple. Near to the compound walls there is the broad pathway (Praharam) with a flower garden on Northern side. On entering the Eastern gate way, one can find the Vinayaga temple, Balibeedam, Nandeeswarar Mandabam and Thwaja Sthambam (Flag post ). On the southern side there is the water head with four Mandaps on around with a 100 pillar Mandap in a temple -car style. There are artistic features on its eastern wall. On remaining Area there is a big Car Parking available for the devotees.

The temple structure begins at the Central Gopuram with a long Praharam (pathway) immediately thereafter. There is continuous Mandap structure and in its South-West Corner there is Sri Raaghu Bagavan Sannathi.

Next to this long prakaram , we see front Mandabam where decoration of the Lord and other functions are held. This mandab was constructed by Govinda Dikshidar who was the Chief Minister to King Achuthappa naikar of Thanjavur in 16thCentury. In the front mandab on the eastern side, beautiful artistic pillar with "older and nine horses" design and similar pillars are found on the southern side (at the place of the raised plat form). There is a beautiful Mandab on the northern side with 'Yalli face' pillars where decoration of the idols taken on procession is made. In its western walls, during the renovation works done in 1929, artistic features have been engraved in a magnificent fashion, with the description of the five Moorthi's adorning the place. In the path way to Sannathi, the art work depicting Veda nayakas ,King Sambumali and penance pose of Ambal attract One's attention. The Dwarapalaga Sudhai work (made of Chunam clay) on each side at the entrance to the Swami Sannathi is charmingly big and so well styled that one loses himself at first sight

Tirunageswaram is one of the 274 Padal Petra Sthalams of lord Shiva. It is one of the Panchakrosa Sthalams. The presiding Deity is Arulmigu Giri Gujambika Sametha Naganathaswamy. Thirugnana Sambandar, Thiru Navukarasar, Thiru Sundramoorthi Nayanar, and Arunagiri Swamigal have praised the glory of the Lord. The Thirunagechurappuranam which was written by Singaravelu pillai contains sufficient information about the temple.

The Chola KingKandaraathithya (950AD-957AD) changed it into a granite edifice. The inner Mantapa was built by Seikkizhar, as it was a favorite place to him. Govinda Dikshitar (17th century A.D.) a minister to Acchuthappa nayak, constructed the outer Mantapam. Sambumali, a King built the beautifulSurya Puskarani beautifully. Rahu Pariharam: Devotees who have Kala Sarpa Dosha, Sarpa Dosha and Rahu Dosha must positively visit this temple and perform Pooja and Milk Abishekam to Lord Rahu for getting married and getting Children. People who have Rahu dasa or Rahu Bukthi are also advised to do Parihara in this temple. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets or ”Chaya Grahams” and their daily positions are calculated by the points where Moon and Sun meet every day in the solar system.

Rahu and Ketu transit anti clockwise which is just opposite direction of other planets. They are deadly enemies of Lord Sun and the Lord Moon. Rahu is the planet having the head part of an Asura called “Swarnabanu” and the tail of a snake. Ketu is the planet having the Asura’s body and the head of the snake. The Asura Swarnabanu drunk the “Amritham” that was taken out by churning the Holy Milky Ocean by Asuras and Devas by cheating the Lord Vishnu. Sun and the Moon are their enemies because they only exposed their cheating.

Rahu Bagavan in 3rd, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses from Lagnam or rasi at the time of birth in a person’s horoscope there will be good effect in his life. But if Rahu Bagawan in 2nd, 5th, 7th or 8th places from Lagnam or rasi at the time of birth in a person’s horoscope indicates Raaghu dhosha and that person suffers due to Rahu’s ill-effects. Rahu Bagawan generally can be said to be the cause for one's good position, status, business, faithfulness, winning over opposition, to be dept-free, to travel overseas, and for mantra power.

Kala Sarpa Dosham: As per astrology or Jyotish Shastra, when Rahu and Ketu are positioned as such all other planets are in between them in their horoscope or Kundli are said to have Kal Sarp Dosh. Even if one planet is out of their positions is also a Kala Sarpa dosham only. Example of Kal Sarp Dosh:

Most of the people with this dosh suffer due to following common difficulties in their life and many more:

•Delayed marriage and Quarrels with partners.
•Diseases that cannot be cured and Problems in getting Children.
•Loss of business and struggles with partners.
•Poor performance in exams and Not able to select proper carrier.
•Block in prosperity and Poor social status.
•Delays in going abroad for studies and jobs

Sri Naganatha Swamy Temple, Thirunageshwaram - Navagraha Temple Darshan (Lord Rahu-North Lunar Node Stalam)
Sarpa Dosh: People whose birth chart has Rahu in first and seventh place from the ascendant or rasi suffer from delayed and broken marriages. Their efforts to select their partners and concluding the marriage proposal often fails due to some reason and this is because of the Rahu’s position affecting the “Kalathira Sthanam”.

People, whose chart shows Rahu in the fifth and ninth positions from the ascendant or rasi, suffer from delayed pregnancy and deficiency like infertility and even with modern medicines could not be cured. Even if they give birth to children they are born with certain problems due to the Puthira Dosham of Rahu.

Rahu Dasa and Bukthies Rahu dasa acts in a person’s life for 18 years after Chevvai or mars Dasa as per Jyotish Shastra. And also Rahu Bukthi acts in every other Dasa periods for certain time before Guru Bukthi. People born in Stars called “Thiruvadhirai”, “Swathy, “Sadayam” which belong Rahu start their life with Rahu Maha Dasa. During these periods’ people often suffer and face challenges in their life because of Lord Rahu’s positions. If Rahu is placed at good positions and receives good aspects from good planets like Guru and Sukran they will soon get good changes after performing Pooja at this temple.

Rahu “Peyarchi” or transit Rahu and Ketu are like twins as they are two parts of an Asura and a Snake put together. They travel anti-clockwise and change their rasi once in approximately 18 months. When people get Rahu in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th positions from their rasi, they will struggle with troubled life because of the effects of Rahu.

People having such difficulties must check their birth charts with an expert astrologer and visit Rahu Tirunageswaram Navagraha Temple to perform remedial Pooja and get relief by getting the blessings of Lord Rahu.

How To Offer Prayers: Rahu Kalam in all the weak days is good for performing Pooja and Abishekam to rahu Bagavan in this temple. This temple is one where Lord Siva was worshipped by Rahu Bagavan and got relived of a curse. In this temple only we can see the Rahu Bagavan with a human face, where as in all other temples we can see the Rahu with Serpent Face.

As per the Sthala puranam of this temple, by doing Milk abisekam here for Rahu during Rahu kalam (period of 1and 1/2 hours occurring every day ) the delay in getting married, childlessness, troublesome married life, ill-effects of Kalasarpa Dhosha (affliction), Kalasthra Dhosha , Sarpa Dhosha are all cured.

1. Stay at Thirunageswaram at least for one day.

2. Do Archana and Pooja to Lord Shiva and Ambal at their Shrines.

3. Book in advance for a Milk Abishekam and perform it at the time of Rahu Kalam.

The Milk while being over poured over the idol of Rahu Bagavan, turns Blue color even today and it is really to be seen, to be believed. Devotees should be lucky to visit this shrine, says Appar Swamigal (Navukkarasar) in one of his rhymes (Thevaram). If people born in stars ' Rohini ' and ' Aayilyam ' perform Abhisekam etc. for Sri Naganatha swami, they can get cured of bodily ailment and he healthy.

4. Chant mantras of Lord Rahu and make 11 rounds around the temple:

5. Pray lord Rahu by sitting silent with closed eyes opposite Rahu Bagavan for some times requesting Him to relieve you from your sins.
