Pitru Paksha - Time for Honouring Ancestors
Pitru paksha 2010 starts on September 24 and ends on October 7th with Mahalaya Amavasya. On this occassion Brahmanda Guruji Shri Narendra Babu Sharma spoke on Pitru Paksha.
  • Dont bury the person who are passed away due to unnatural death like accidents, suicides etc., in that case cremate them.

  • Only on the day of Tithi, you should do pitru karya to your ancestors. Second time in a year, you should do it in Pitru Paksha. Third time in a year, you should do it in Mahalaya amavasya.

  • Perform Shaddha or the Pitr Paksha by offering specially made sweets like Sweet Pongal (Sakkarai Pongal / Jaggery Rice), Kheer (Payasam) and food to the departed soul according to your own rituals.

  • No one in the family should have the food offerings except sweet offered to ancestors. You should have only the sweet offered to ancestors. This sweet must be consumed by family members only.

  • The other food offerings can be offered any beggar in the streets.

  • No one should go for any kind of tithi oota or tithi sapadu and have food.

  • The cloth offered to ancestors during Shaddha should not be worn by any of the family members or relative. Give this cloth to an orphan.

  • Dont keep big photographs of your ancestors in living area of your house with light on it. You should keep this photograph only on tithi day to offer your shaddha and place them back after your prayers.

  • If husband and wife's parents are passed away, they can keep their photographs in their bed room only, not in other rooms.

  • Dont invite anyone for tithi or pitru paksha, only family members should perform it.

  • If a person having two wives is passed away, first wife should not invite the second wife family for pitru paksha. They both should perform it separately.

  • Son in law and his children should not attend pitru paksha only your daughter should attend have the prasad and should leave the house.

  • Dont put big posters or banners when someone is passed away.

Guruji Shri Narendra Babu Sharmaji's suggestion: follow this from this Pitru Paksha While having your lunch in afternoons, offer first hand plam (ondu ththu anna in kannada ; oru pidi saadam in tamil) to our ancestors. No matter where you have lunch just place it outside, our ancestors will have it in the form of crows. Follow this everyday while having lunch in afternoon.
If you are having your lunch in hotels, place it in a tissue paper and place it outside after you finish your lunch.

  1. Hi Divine Brahmanda,

Guruji also advised not to have rice on Monday and Saturday night for dinner. Also rice should not be consumed on Kanda Srashti, Amavasya and Pournami days. Hope I got it right.
